Now that the weather is warming up and COVID pandemic restrictions are being eased around the country, people are eager to get out there on the road and do some traveling. Where are you headed this year? If you have a big trip planned for the summer, the team at ZDental would like to remind you that oral health care should never go by the wayside when you’re on vacation. Here are a few tips you can use to maintain good oral hygiene even when you’re away from home.

Keeping Your Teeth Clean While Camping

While some people like to vacation at resorts and beaches, others prefer the calm serenity of nature. If you’re camping this summer, you can still keep your teeth clean even if there’s no running water available. Be sure to bring plenty of bottled water so you can still brush your teeth twice per day. When you spit and rinse, do it into an empty water bottle to minimize your environmental impact. You can also bring some floss; just be sure to dispose of all used floss and water bottles in a sealed trash container, as some animals like bears can be attracted to their minty aromas.

It’s also a good idea to search for some emergency medical and dental facilities near your campsite before you get there so you will always know where to go if you have a dental emergency.

Good Oral Healthcare on Road Trips

There’s nothing like a road trip to give you that sense of adventure you’ve been craving. Just make sure you don’t neglect your oral health during your journey. Each passenger should pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss and keep them in an accessible area of the vehicle. That way, when you stop for gas or a bathroom break, you can take that time to clean your teeth, especially if you’ve been snacking on sugary treats while on the road.

Caring for Your Teeth during Air Travel

Depending on where you’re flying, you could be on a plane for 18 hours or more! We would not recommend going that long without brushing your teeth, so be sure to pack a toothbrush, floss, and TSA-compliant travel toothpaste in your carry-on bag. That way, you can always brush your teeth after your in-flight snack, or floss if you feel a piece of food lodged between your teeth. In addition, be sure to purchase a large bottle of water before getting on the plane, as dry mouth and dehydration can give bacteria the perfect breeding ground.
